ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) is ASEAN’s knowledge hub and centre of excellence in building capacity for conflict resolution and reconciliation and further strengthening peace-oriented values towards harmony, peace, security, and stability in our region and beyond. It serves as a research and capacity-building institution as requested by the ASEAN Member States as well as supports the strengthening of cooperation among research institutions, and academic institutes, pooling of expertise, and disseminating information, as well as promoting knowledge and skills for sustainable regional peace and reconciliation. As a contribution to the implementation of the ASESAN’s Joint Statement on Promoting Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN, the ASEAN Women for Peace Registry (AWPR) was launched in 2018.

Following the successful organization of the AWPR Strategic Planning Meeting in 2022, ASEAN-IPR and AWPR have agreed on some priority actions in 2023, including capacity-building activities for AWPR members. These activities are also aligned with Priority Action 2.3.1. of the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on Women, Peace and Security (ASEAN RPA WPS): Build capacity of the ASEAN Women for Peace Registry and/or regional networks of women peace mediators and negotiators, including identification of training needs and development of standardised training and curriculum in various thematic areas related to peacebuilding, conflict prevention, resolution and recovery, including digital skills.

With the adoption of the ASEAN RPA WPS in November 2022, the reaffirmation of the WPS commitments during the WPS High Level Meeting in July 2022 and anchored to the existing mandates of the WPS prime movers in the ASEAN such as the ASEAN-IPR, ASEAN WPS Advisory Group, AWPR and support of international partners such as UN Women, it is envisioned that the capacity building support contribute to the robust implementation of the ASEAN RPA WPS through increased awareness and deeper understanding of the key concepts and frameworks on global and regional WPS Agenda, emerging issues and trends, draw out from the good practices and lessons learned from various country experiences and experiences from diverse network of international and local WPS practitioners at the policy and grassroots level.
