Recognising the transformative roles that women fulfil in building, maintaining, and fostering peace and security in the region, ASEAN has developed the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN (ASEAN RPA WPS).
This initiative moves forward the implementation of the Joint Statement on Promoting Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN that was adopted by the ASEAN Leaders in 2017. Drawing upon the main recommendations of the 2021 ASEAN Regional Study on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW) and the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) in close collaboration with the ASEAN sectoral bodies and institutions across all three ASEAN Community Pillars jointly led the development of the ASEAN RPA WPS with support of the ASEAN-USAID PROSPECT project and UN Women. After being adopted during the 40th ASEAN Summit in November 2022, a dedicated launch will be held on Monday, 5 December 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Part of the highlights of the launch of the ASEAN RPA WPS are the sessions with ASEAN Dialogue and Development Partners, civil society and international organisations, and other key stakeholders that will provide opportunities for exchange of views, good practices, and ideas for collaboration on priorities of the regional plan of action.
The launch is part of a broader initiative on advocacy and awareness raising to help strengthen ownership and buy-in of the ASEAN RPA WPS from stakeholders across the three ASEAN Communities; ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and ASEAN Socio Cultural Community (ASCC). In particular, an Advocacy and Awareness Raising Work Plan is being developed as an ASEAN-owned deliverable of the ASEAN RPA on WPS. This initiative is being supported by ASEAN-USAID PROSPECT and UN Women with the support of the Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the Government of the Republic of Korea
