The United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), a landmark resolution on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) that links gender equality to the maintenance of international peace and security. In recognition of women’s transformative roles in building, maintaining, and fostering peace and security in the region, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations launched its Regional Plan of Action on WPS (RPA WPS) on 5 December 2022. The RPA WPS provides a regional framework for ASEAN Member States to prioritize efforts that promote women’s participation and representation in peace and peacebuilding efforts, including prevention of conflicts, peacebuilding and peacekeeping, protection of women and girls in conflict recovery efforts as well as addressing emerging security challenges, such as climate-related disasters, and cybersecurity.

The media plays an indispensable role in the implementation and localization of the RPA WPS through awareness raising and monitoring of its implementation. It also has the opportunity to influence and transform narratives, particularly shifting societal views of women from passive victims in conflict to active leaders in peace and security.

Against this backdrop, the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP), in partnership with UN Women Indonesia and supported by the Governments of Canada and the Republic of Korea, is hosting a two-day online and four-day in person Media and WPS training for journalists, media professionals, writers, youth, and influencers.
